BIOGRAPHIE
His Eminence the 2. Khyabje Drukpa Thuksay Rinpoche came to Europe for the first time along with His Holiness the XIIth Gyalwang Drukpa, when the Teaching Hall was inaugurated in Plouray. This year the European Drukpa Centres have again invited Khyabje Rinpoche, and His Eminence has accepted in spite of a heavy schedule. His Eminence Khyabje Thuksay Rinpoche currently dwells in Bhutan at the Tango Monastic University where He is proceeding with a Teaching cycle due to be completed in two years‘ time. On the whole, Khyabje Rinpoche will have spent nine years studying, raising his philosophical Knowledge to Khempo level (Buddhist PHD). On completion of His Studies, His Eminence will head the Druk Sangag Choëling monastery in Darjeeling. Drubpön Nawang Tenzin Paksam Yongdu has also requested Khyabje Thuksay Rinpoche to accept leadership of all the European Drukpa Centres. Drubpön Nawang was very close to Khyabje Thuksay Rinpoche’s previous incarnation who was His Master and whom He served for fifteen years. The previous Khyabje Thuksay Rinpoche was the Son of the Xth Gyalwang Drukpa, and His mother, a Dakini named Ashi Boula, was the Daughter of Mahasiddha Drubwang Shakya Shri. In the times of the Xth Gyalwang Drukpa, Gyalwang Mipham Tcheuwang, there had been a decline in the practice of Mahamudra by the monks at the Tibetan Sangag Choëling Monastery, and particularly in yogin practices such as the Six Yogas of Naropa. To remedy this situation, Gyalwang Mipham Tcheuwang appealed to the great Yogi Drubwang Shakya Shri who then lived in Kham, in Eastern Tibet.
Moreover, Gyalwang Mipham Tcheuwang saw that in the future the Drukpa Lineage would need a Regent who would ensure the continuation of the Lineage. Gyalwang Mipham Tcheuwang therefore expressed the wish to have a Son. Some time later, in the Fire Snake year (1917), in the high sacred site of Tsari, Dakini Ashi Boula gave birth to the Child whom Gyalwang Mipham Tcheuwang named Ngawang Gyourme. He later received the name of Thuksay Rinpoche (Precious Son of the Heart). At that same time, the XIIIth Dalaï Lama, Thupten Gyatso, also recognised Himself the Child as being the Incarnation of Takloung Ma Rinpoche’s Speech, Hierarch of the Takloung Lineage, close to the Nyingmapa School. The XIIth Gyalwang Drukpa prefered Thuksay Rinpoche to remain within the Drukpa Lineage, because His activity would be very important for the Lineage. Thuksay Rinpoche’s birth was not ordinary. He came into this world intentionally so as to help all sentient beings. His Enthronement took place at Druk Thupten Choëkhor Ling. Gyalwang Mipham Tcheuwang decided that His Son, at the age of seven, would go and study at the VIIth Zigar Rinpoche’s monastery in Kham. The monastery was highly reputed for its discipline. Zigar Rinpoche gave Rinpoche the Transmissions of the oral Lineage of Mahamudra. Thuksay Rinpoche brought His studies and Realisations to completion and became a great Yogi.
After the VIIth Zigar Rinpoche’s Parinirvana, Thuksay Rinpoche, with the help of Khempo Teunden of Sourmang monastery, founded a Shedra (a philosophical college), which is still very active to this day. It was His Uncle, His Mother’s Brother, Gyalsay Phatchok Rinpoche, the Embodiment of Vajradhara, who Transmitted the Dzogchen Teachings to Thuksay Rinpoche. Drubwang Shakya Shri’s main Disciple, Tripeun Péma Tcheugyal, who was still called Trulshik Dordje Tchang, from Ladakh, became His main Guru. Under His Guidance, Thuksay Rinpoche accomplished several times the three-years retreat. He actually spent ten years in retreat during which, He put into practice, with unwavering courage and effort, the Instructions He had received. His disciples then beseeched Him to bestow on them the precious Dharma Teachings. To this purpose, Thuksay Rinpoche founded with help of Khenpo Noriang Rinpoche, another Shedra at Sangag Choëling monastery.
The Xth Gyalwang Drukpa passed into Parinirvana in 1930. The XIth Galwang Drukpa was found and enthroned, and received the name of Gyalwang Guelek Wangpo. Tripeun Pema Tcheugyal became His root Master. In 1959, when Gyalwang Guelek Wangpo was twenty-nine, Tibet suffered a great upheaval. His Holiness left the country with Thuksay Rinpoche, Doubsay Apho Rinpoche, another Grandson of Drubwang Shakya Shri, and some Lamas, monks and disciples. As they reached Buxa, in India, Gyalwang Guelek Wangpo passed into Parinirvana. As predicted by The Xth Gyalwang Drukpa, Thuksay Rinpoche became Regent to the Drukpa Lineage, in charge of Its continuance in exile. Rinpoche founded the Chitray retreat Centre, and with the Lamas and monks, built the new monastery of the Lineage, Druk Sangag Choëling, in Darjeeling. Thuksay Rinpoche met another of Drubwang Shakya Shri’s great disciples, the Great Realised Lama Seunam Zangpo Rinpoche who lived in Bhutan. Lama Seunam Zangpo Rinpoche gave Him Teachings according to the Bhutanese Drukpa tradition, and helped Him establish the new seat of the Lineage, in particular by offering precious ritual items. Thuksay Rinpoche relentlessly undertook the search for the Incarnation of the XIth Gyalwang Drukpa. He went to Dharamsala several times to meet His Holiness the XIVth Dalaï Lama and request His enlightend vision. He sought the support of other great Masters such as the Gyalwa Karmapa. All the predictions concorded and converged towards a single Revelation.
In 1966, Fire Horse year, Thuksay Rinpoche with Khamtrul Rinpoche Deungyu Nyima, went to the Dalhousie Tibetan encampment where dwelt Bairo Rinpoche and MayumLa. They recognized Their Son as His Holiness the XIIth Gyalwang Drukpa, then aged three. In 1967, His Holiness was enthroned at Druk Sangag Choëling in Darjeeling in the presence of many Masters and representatives of all Lineages. Thuksay Rinpoche became His Holiness the XIIth Gyalwang Drukpa’s root Guru, and He gave Him all of the Initiations of the Glorious Drukpa Lineage, the Explanations which liberate and the ritual Readings which shape its foundation: The Mahamudra Instructions, the Six Yogas of Naropa, the six Points of even Flavour, the seven links of Interdependence, the oral Transmission of the Dakinis and others Transmissions. In response to the fervent invitation of many disciples, Thuksay Rinpoche went to Ladakh where He gave Teachings and Initiations, and gave vows to many monks. Rinpoche undertook the building of new temples and the renovation of the monasteries of the Lineage. He performed several miracles as making rain for there was a serious drought in Ladakh at the time. In 1981, shortly before His Parinirvana, Thuksay Rinpoche traveled to the West at the invitation of a few devoted disciples. This is when He came to France in Monaco, to Belgium and to other European countries, assisted by Drubpön Nawang who was then twenty-seven years old. He bestowed His precious Teachings, and in preparation for the future, He laid the spiritual foundations which would ensure the development of the precious Dharma. We owe the existence of Europe’s Drukpa Centres to the boundless compassion of this great Master. After returning to India, Thuksay Rinpoche received an invitation from the spiritual Authorities in Bhutan. He went to the land of the Dragon in 1982 to transmit the precious Dharma. He went back to Ladakh one last time at Hemis Monastery. Though seriously impeded by illness, Thuksay Rinpoche relentlessly bestowed His final Instructions. On March 8, 1983, His physical Body merged into the ultimate sphere of phenomena. His Holiness Gyalwang Drukpa and Drubpön Nawang were present at that Moment.
The second Thuksay Rinpoche was born in 1986 in Chushul, Ladakh, on the birthday of His Holiness Gyalwang Drukpa ; it was the tenth day in the Tibetan calendar, Guru Rinpoche day. Before His birth, as He was still in His mother’s womb, the oracles and Rinpoches were talking about the coming of a great Being. Strange birds flew above His parents‘ house, and during a week light showered all over the village. Rinpoche’s mother died in childbirth. The birth of this extraordinary Being drew many visitors and oracles. His Holiness the Dalaï Lama and His Holiness Gyalwang Drukpa were consulted, and they saw through dreams and visions that the New Incarnation of Thuksay Rinpoche was in Ladakh. In July 1987, His Holiness the Dalaï Lama and His Holiness Gyalwang Drukpa went there and spent two hours meditating in Gyalwa Gotsangpa’s cave. In Their meditative absorption, Their Holinesses saw that the Child who was born in Chushul, was the authentic Incarnation of Kyabje Thuksay Rinpoche. A short time later, His Holiness Gyalwang Drukpa went in Person to Chushul to pay homage to the Reincarnation of His precious Master. He made the long life Mandala offering, and requested that the family take good care of the Precious Child. On June 30, 1988, at the age of two and a half, Kyabje Thuksay Rinpoche, accompanied by His Holiness Gyalwang Drukpa, left Ladakh for the Druk Sangag Choëling monastery. Their arrival in Darjeeling was met with great jubilation, profound devotion and immense joy by the monks and disciples of Kyabje Thuksay Rinpoche. On October 31, 1988, Kyabje Thuksay Rinpoche was oficially enthroned at Druk Sangag Choëling monastery, the World Seat of the Dukpa Lineage, in the presence of Rinpoches from all Lineages, Lamas, monks and disciples who had come specifically for this exceptional ceremony. Then began the spiritual Education, for the sake of all beings, of Kyabje Thuksay Rinpoche, under the great Benevolence of His Holiness the XIIth Gyalwang Drukpa.
